Lufthansa Luxe

Valets, chauffers and high-style lounges redefine the first-class experience.

If bubble baths, cigar lounges and gourmet restaurants don’t sound like your standard airport experience, you haven’t been to Germany lately. Or at least to Lufthansa’s new first class terminal in Frankfurt. Next month, as part of a $135-million upgrade, the carrier will roll out another über-lounge, in Munich, followed by more, in Berlin, Paris, Düsseldorf and New York — the likes of which have yet to grace a single U.S. airport. Frankfurt’s Antonio Citterio-designed sanctuary is so plush, passengers have been showing up hours earlier just to enjoy the perks. Yet those fliers are missing out on the best perk of all — permission to arrive at the last gong. First class check-in closes just 25 minutes before departure thanks to a valet who parks your car (or returns it to the rental agency); a personal assistant who whisks you through a fast-track security lane; and a chauffeur who drives you to the plane in a Mercedes or Porsche. So while Cathay Pacific’s first-class haven in Hong Kong — the world’s “best lounge” — may be a fine place to spend your time with shower suites and game zones, Lufthansa promises to give you back your time. Which is, of course, the ultimate luxury.
