Istanbul may be the one city in Europe currently garnering more ink than Valencia, but right now it’s a small Turkish beach town that’s got our attention. Until recently, the low-key peninsula of Kas wouldn’t have passed a laugh test on the jet-set circuit. But that was before the Deniz Feneri Lighthouse opened. Like many a Mediterranean hideaway, the area was discovered by the hippies in the 60s and 70s, before establishing itself as a stop-off for yachts doing the Blue Voyage of Turkey’s jeweled southwest coast. The Deniz Feneri is, simply put, the first destination hotel in this fishing-turned-resort town. The sprawling hillside property is comprised of only 27 rooms, spoiled with light and space, right on the waterfront. Trimmings include a terrace restaurant, sunset café and Turkish bath. Kas may not be the classic white-sand haven of the Med, but the town’s winding cobblestone streets, harborside eateries, ancient ruins and seafront vistas have remained unsullied by mass tourism. And while it’s but a two-hour drive from the more touristed Antalya, this backwaters pocket of Asia Minor is a perfect launch point for the region’s mountain villages — not to mention a spot of dolphin therapy.
