Norman Foster reinvents Zurich landmark
Zurich’s most iconic hotel re-opened yesterday following a $400 million overhaul by Norman Foster. The Dolder Grand — which was originally opened in 1899 as a health spa and then transformed into one of the grand hotels of Europe — has now doubled in size with two new wings added by the British starchitect. With its interiors entirely redesigned and reconfigured to house 173 luxury rooms, the hotel has also given birth to a new 43,000 square-foot spa. Doubles start at $844 and max out at the top floor suites named after the Dolder Grand’s most celebrated former guests. The Maestro Suite, in honor of conductor Herbert von Karajan, is a duplex that goes for $14,000 per night — nearly double the price of “Suite 100,” inspired by the Rolling Stones.
